Susan Gromacki, OD, FAAO, FSLS, provides key takeaways from this year's American Academy of Optometry symposium genetics and the cornea.

As the program and education chair, Susan Gromacki, OD, FAAO, FSLS, was responsible for organizing this year's American Academy of Optometry's (AAOpt) symposium on genetics and the cornea, which focused on the latest advancements in genetic research and its impact on eye care. Gromacki assembled a panel of expert speakers to share their insights. Larissa Huron, MD, a leading geneticist and ophthalmologist, provided an overview of genetics, including terminology and recent breakthroughs. Sudha Iyengar, PhD, discussed the genetics of keratoconus, a condition Gromacki treats frequently. Cornea specialist Mary Ann Price, PhD, covered the genetics of corneal dystrophies and various corneal transplantation procedures. Loretta Shaka Flynn, OD, PhD, shared her expertise on the genetics of microbial keratitis and how clinicians can effectively communicate genetic information to patients.

One of the key revelations from the symposium was that genetics plays a more significant role in eye conditions than previously thought. Gromacki emphasizes the need for optometrists to be aware of the genetic components of various eye diseases and to communicate this information to patients with compassion. She advises that each patient may react differently to news of a genetic condition, and it is crucial to provide support and work towards the best possible outcome. Gromacki also praised the AAOpt's Cornea, Contact Lens, and Refractive Technologies section, noting its passion for the field and the valuable learning opportunities it provides through events and expert panels. She reflects on her own experience as the moderator, acknowledging that she too learned a great deal from the symposium. Overall, the symposium highlighted the importance of understanding the genetic factors underlying eye conditions and the need for optometrists to effectively communicate this information to their patients.
