The launch of the nutritional supplement follows a clinical trial that demonstrated healthy tear production and provided noticeable relief of dry eye symptoms in as little as 2 to 4 weeks.
Bausch + Lomb Corporation has announced the official US launch of its Blink NutriTears, a nutritional supplement for the treatment of dry eyes.
According to the company, Blink NutriTears “target the key root causes of dry eyes, promote healthy tear production and provide noticeable relief of dry eye symptoms in as little as 2 to 4 weeks.”1
John Ferris, executive vice president of Consumer at Bausch + Lomb, discussed the product in a press release from the company stating, “with Blink NutriTears, consumers now have a first-of-its-kind clinically proven nutritional supplement that helps hydrate their eyes from within and provides long-lasting relief.”
Blink NutriTears is comprised of a proprietary blend of ingredients including lutein, zeaxanthin, curcumin, and vitamin D.1 This was shown to improve ocular symptom severity and tear film homeostasis and help tears stay on the eyes for 33% longer.1 This was shown in a clinical trial of NutriTears (NCT05481450) that was conducted in 155 adults (aged 18–65).2,3
Participants were randomized to receive 1 Blink NutriTears or placebo capsule per day at breakfast for 56 days and were tested with a Schirmer’s Test strip at baseline, day 14, day 28, and day 56. The study met its primary endpoints at day 56, Schirmer’s test scores and improvement in overall Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores. Scores for total OSDI, and symptoms and vision domains, significantly improved by day 14 for treatment versus placebo and were maintained to day 56. Also, the treatment group showed significantly improved tear film break-up time (TBUT) and tear film osmolarity, versus placebo, by day 56, along with significant improvements in corneal and conjunctival staining and inflammation.2,3
Laura M. Periman, MD, founder and director of Dry Eye Services and Clinical Research at Periman Eye Institute in Seattle discussed the trial results in the press release.
"Blink NutriTears demonstrated consistent positive results across two distinct studies. The clinical results are compelling - within a month, patients achieved statistically significant dry eye symptom relief," said Periman. "With its unique formulation, I anticipate Blink NutriTears will become an important addition to dry eye management strategies."
The Blink brand from Bausch + Lomb also consists of lubricating eye drops for dry eyes and dry contacts.
