Sheryl Stevenson:
What are some emerging trends that you believe would be highlighted during the agenda? And why are these topics so relevant right now?
Bonnie An Henderson, MD:
So in EnVision Summit, we have all the specialties represented. So everything from cataract and refractive to retina, glaucoma, pediatrics, plastics, and so each of the program committee chairs, they actually devise the agenda, and they select amazing speakers. And what we're focusing on are the new and the exciting trends in each of those fields.
So for example, in cataract surgery, we're talking not just about how to manage complications, but [we're also discussing] all the new IOLs that are out there. Refractive surgery is always changing, so it's really important to know what type of lenses are out there, [and] how to choose them properly. In retina, there's always discussion about macular degeneration, whether they're injectable medications, new surgical tools as well, diagnostic tools across the board for glaucoma, there's lots and lots of new things happening. It's incredible how [in] ophthalmology, we always have technological advances. It's phenomenal. So I think that, you know, if you step away from meetings for a year or two, and you come back, you will be amazed at what changes in a year. It's really mind blowing.
I think those are some of the new things that will be highlighted. Also, what we always try to do is really have a leadership seminar. And so this year, as usual, Dr Malvina Eydelman will also be running that leadership symposia. And we're really trying to bring together a lot of the different organizations and a lot of the leaders.
We're in discussions with a lot of the groups that really empower women, empower diversity across our medical field, and we're trying to bring the leaders together and really talk about their pathway. How did they get to where they are? What choices did they make in their career? What advances did they make, and what pathway did they take to bring them their successes?
So those are really fascinating talks, because it really incorporates not just their the medical decision making that they made, but also more personal career decisions. And what you know, what happened after they made those decisions? It's really interesting, because no one career is the same, right? Everyone takes a different path, and I think a lot of people can learn from some of the personal stories that people share.
