Pediatric optometrist Dr. Magdalena Stec highlights effective treatment options and practical advice for parents to help manage and control myopia in their kids.

At EyeCon 2024, Magdalena Stec, OD, FAAO, a pediatric optometrist at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, tackled the pressing issue of myopia among children. With the global rise in myopia rates, Stec emphasized the critical need for early intervention, especially for the pediatric population. "It's very exciting to have some great treatment options for our pediatric patients," she noted, underscoring the advancements in eye care that can help children manage this condition effectively.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, can significantly impact a child's quality of life, making it essential to identify and address the issue as early as possible. Stec stressed the importance of getting children to see an eye care provider at a young age, ideally before they develop significant myopia or even when they are premyopic. "Early intervention is key," she asserted, highlighting the role of education for parents about available treatment options.

To empower parents, Stec introduced practical strategies to mitigate the progression of myopia. One such method is the "20-20-20 rule," which encourages children to take a break from close-up activities. After 20 minutes of focusing on something nearby, kids should look away at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple practice can help reduce eye strain and promote healthier visual habits. Additionally, Stec advocated for increased outdoor time, which has been shown to have protective effects against myopia development.

As myopia becomes a growing concern worldwide, Stec's insights serve as a vital reminder of the proactive steps that can be taken to help children see their best. By fostering early intervention and educating families, the optometry community can make a significant difference in managing myopia and enhancing children's overall eye health.
