Nutraceutical company Focus Vitamins has announced the expansion of its product portfolio with Focus Lutein Capsules, which support daily eye health with lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin.1 The new capsules are an optimal triple-carotenoid that also helps maintain healthy vision and protects eyes from age-related changes, according to a news release.

“We are excited about the launch of Focus Lutein, which is a great option for anyone wanting to support their daily eye health routine or individuals with a family history of abnormal eye aging," says Clint Worley, chief operating officer at Focus Vitamins, in the release. "Additionally, this daily eye health supplement helps to increase macular pigment density, which assists in optimal blue light filtration.”

In particular, lutein and zeaxanthin can play an important role in helping to filter out blue light in the retina. These carotenoids are found in green leafy vegetables, in addition to vegetables that are orange and yellow.2 Meso-zeaxanthin is not normally found readily in food sources but can be extracted from naturally occurring lutein found in marigolds. Therefore, one of the only ways to increase meso-zeaxanthin concentrations is through supplementation, according to Focus Vitamins.

All 3 carotenoids in the supplement are found in high concentrations in the eye, specifically the macula, which is responsible for sharp visual acuity and color discrimination. A clinical study measured macular pigment optical density (MPOD) levels and found that levels positively increased with consistent supplementation of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Other studies have also suggested that low macular pigment levels can eventually lead to age-related eye aging, and that supplements have the potential to help increase macular pigment levels.1

Focus Lutein may be particularly effective for those who look at computer screens or phones consistently and daily, those who are exposed to bright sunlight, or those who want to support their eyes against normal eye aging. The new capsules can also be taken by vegetarians and vegans, as they are formulated without added sugar or gelatin.2

Focus Vitamins also provides a variety of other supplements and products, including postinjection eye drops, blue light supplements, multivitamins, and dry eye relief supplements, among others. One of the dry eye relief supplements available is Focus Relief Plus, which has 1620 mg of re-esterified triglyceride omega-3 fatty acids and 75 mg of added GLA. The inclusion of EPA, DHA, and GLA can work to reduce inflammation. Focus Vitamins also provides a handful of AREDS2/AREDS formula options to support macular health. AREDS2 has been proven through clinical trials to be a safer option for smokers and reduces the risk of adverse effects associated with higher levels of zinc.3
