Associate Optometric Editor Katherine M. Mastrota, OD, reports on her experience as part of Allergan’s Visionary Insights for Eye Care (VIEW) at the 90th annual SECO International meeting in Atlanta:
I had the great pleasure to join a fabulous group of women colleagues in VIEW. Atlanta-based Karen Fallon-Scarcliff, COE, OCS, CCOA, eyecare business adviser at Allergan, started the evening presenting historical trends in female wage earnings, the different goals of women and men practitioners, and the shifting profile of optometry.
Dori Carlson, OD, of Park River, ND; April Jasper, OD, FAAO, of West Palm Beach, FL; Louise Sclafani, OD, FAAO, of Chicago; and I, each from a different mode of optometric practice, were delighted to answer questions, offer advice, and share the stories of our careers with 40 of our female colleagues.
Discussions of career turning points, family-work balance, and how we can give back to the profession that has given so much to us made for an interesting, informational, and inspiring event. I personally would like to thank Allergan for bringing us all together and its support of our profession.
