Alcon launches its new daily disposable contact lens to North American practitioners.

By Ernie Bowling, OD

Dallas, TX-Approximately 600 practitioners from across the United States attended the North American launch symposium for Alcon's newest contact lens, Dailies Total 1 water gradient contact lenses, held May 17 and 1 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas Texas.

The single-use lens represents a new era in contact lenses. It is the first and only water gradient contact lens, showing a gradual transition from 33% water at the silicone hydrogel lens core to over 80% water content at the contact lens surface. An ultrasoft surface gel composed of a hydrophilic polymer network with extended surface polymer chains allows the water content to approach 100% at the very outer surface of the contact lens, similar to the precornea tear film. This gives the lens an excellent comfort rating, with over 97% of patients successfully fit with the product.

Dailies Total 1 represents the newest generation of LightStream lens technology. Powers ranges at U.S .launch range from -0.50 D to -6.00 D (in 0.25 D steps) and from -6.50 D to - 10.00 D ( in 0.50 D steps).
