Ernest L. Bowling

OD, MS, FAAO

Ernest L. Bowling, OD, MS, FAAO, joins the publication as chief optometric editor. Katherine M. Mastrota, MS, OD, FAAO, will take on the role of associate optometric editor.

Bailey, NCLC, FAAO, editor in chief and content channel director of Optometry Times. “Dr. Bowling is an excellent writer with his finger on the pulse of the profession. His knowledge and guidance will bring much to the publication. In addition, Dr. Mastrota adds fresh perspective with her experience at a tertiary care center. I look forward to the positive changes we can bring about for our readers.”

Dr. Bowling is in solo private optometric practice in Gadsden, AL. He received his Doctor of Optometry and Master of Science in physiological optics degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. Dr. Bowling earned Diplomate status in the Primary Care Section of the American Academy of Optometry and serves as Diplomate Exam Chair of the Section. He is a former associate professor and director of the primary care service at the UAB School of Optometry. He also served as center director at VisionAmerica of Gadsden, a co-management surgical referral center.

A prolific international lecturer and author of over 100 professional journal publications, he is associate clinical editor of Review of Cornea & Contact Lenses and serves on the editorial board of Optometric Management, Contemporary Optometry and Refractive Eyecare. He is the author of Optometric Management’s e-newsletter “Managing Dry Eye” and is the past editor of the e-journals Comprehensive Optometry and Diagnostic Digest. Dr. Bowling is a past recipient of the Georgia Optometric Association’s Bernard Kahn Memorial Award for outstanding service to the optometric profession.

Katherine M. Mastrota

OD, MS, FAAO

Dr. Katherine Mastrota is center director of Omni Eye Surgery, an optometric referral center, in New York City. She graduated from New York University with a Master of Science in biology and received her Doctor of Optometry degree at State University of New York College of Optometry. The school presented her with the Alumnae of the Year award in 2007.

Dr. Mastrota has lectured nationally and written for many journals. She is a contributing editor to Contact Lens Spectrum and online newsletters Optometric Physician and Contact Lenses Today and sits on the editorial board of Advanced Ocular Care and Refractive EyeCare. Dr. Mastrota is on the scientific board of directors of Cynacon OCuSOFT and Noble Vision, as well serving as an advisor to a number of pharmaceutical companies. With a special interest in ocular surface disease and dry eye, Dr. Mastrota was appointed secretary to the Ocular Surface Society of Optometry (OSSO) and serves as secretary of the Anterior Segment Special Interest Group of the American Academy of Optometry. She is a past member of the board of directors of the Optometric Society of the City of New York.
